Ask Deb: Trying To Get A Training Grant
Share
Dear Deb:

I have been unemployed for three months. I recently applied for a grant for additional training via my state’s department of labor. In addition to requiring me to track all of my job applications, they are also requiring me to inform my counselor every time I have an interview, so that the counselor can follow up with the person with whom I interviewed in order to verify that I actually had an interview! They are making me do this in order to get the training grant! Deb, I don’t need to tell you that a “check up” call from someone at the state DOL is going to immediately kick me out of consideration. I want to go for the job training, but I just can’t allow them to call everyone I interview with. What should I do?

Vexed by the State

Dear Vexed:

What you have described is yet another example of a disastrous policy, borne out of a fear that someone is trying to scam the system. Sure, the folks at the DOL want to be sure you’re actually searching for a job in your field. Your record of applications proves that. To verify that you went and interviewed is, at best, a waste of time, and at worst, as you note, a death knell for your candidacy. If I were to receive such a call, it would raise all kinds of suspicions!

Here’s what I suggest you do. Talk to your counselor. Explain your concerns that if they check in with these employers, you are NEVER going to be hired by any of them. Appeal to common sense. That may very well not work. If they are inflexible, then my advice is that you forego the training for the time being, and focus on networking your way into a new position. Good luck.
