DESCRIPTION

Assess and manage patient health problems including actual and potential conditions within an outpatient Neuro-immunology clinic. Plan, implement and evaluate health care treatments. Under the supervision of an attending neurologist, assess laboratory and imaging findings including blood tests, electromyography, MRI, CT Scan and X-rays. Utilize critical thinking skills to individualize patient care in order to manage illness, promote well-being, foster rehabilitative and disease preventive life style choices. Prescribe medications and supportive therapies to help maintain health. Communicate with patients, their significant others and their primary health care providers. Responsibilities include assessing individual participants health status, performing detailed neurological examinations, assessing current drug therapies and potential interactions, managing appropriately controlled substances, liaising with Primary health care providers, and communicating laboratory or other study results. Provide current information on neurology research developments and education regarding medications to both participants and ancillary staff. Communicate clinical findings to physicians, research scientists and lay persons on a weekly basis. Educate nurses and ancillary staff about disease processes, physical examination and history taking as well as detailed neurological examination. Serve as a resource for RNs to aid with clinical queries and provide urgent patient evaluations. Provide telephone and MyChart triage, including identifying clinical critical issues, providing patient and family education, prescribing necessary pharmacological interventions, and providing emotional support to the patient and significant others. Other duties include:

  • Interpretation of diagnostic tests and appropriate follow up treatment.

  • Primary resource for medication complications and abnormal blood test results.

  • Provide telephone and MyChart triage to Neurology patients, including appropriate referral.

  • Responsible for evaluating diagnostic work sheets and providing a definitive diagnosis.

While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying to this position.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the PA or Sr. PA level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • Current BART or BLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get UCSD BART within six months of hire date.

  • Must have recent ambulatory/outpatient clinical experience. Training or work experience in neurology strongly preferred.

  • Possess knowledge of neurological diseases, treatments, drug developments, drug interactions and side effects.

  • Possess knowledge of common neurological disorders and how to manage them, including knowledge of pharmaceutical treatments their side effects and interactions.

  • Ability to extract pertinent information from data in order to diagnose an individual's neurological disorder.

  • Ability to take detailed medical history, perform physical examination and evaluate pertinent health deficits.

  • Communication skills that will ensure effective record keeping, management of patient's health care needs and collaboration with other clinicians and study subjects.

  • Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and consistently demonstrate empathy and kindness to all staff and patients.

  • Knowledge of FDA and DEA regulations and Guidelines.

  • Ability to utilize computerized databases including but not limited to Epic, MS Word, MS Excel, and or PowerPoint.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Background in Neurology and HIV.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $135,386 - $178,420 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $64.84 - $85.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
