The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety is currently recruiting for a Hauling Permit Compliance Officer (Administrative Specialist I) located in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

This announcement may also be used for future vacancies throughout the state of Maryland for SHA

Nature of Work: The candidate will serve as a team member in the Motor Carrier Division, Hauling Permits Section. This position utilizes the Maryland One System to issue oversize/overweight permits to move materials, or equipment across Maryland roadways. This position requires a high level of state and county map interpretations, as well as rules and regulations related to truck/weight enforcement and compliance. The selected candidate will be expected to progressively acquire knowledge of the permitting process and the laws and regulations governing permitted loads in order to process hauling permits for customers nationwide. This candidate should be self-motivated with the ability to work independently and have a high regard for attention to detail.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six months of experience performing clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work.

Preferred Qualification:

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • Knowledge of commercial vehicle programs as well as size and weights regulations
  • Experience in customer service
  • Experience in computer skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of the oversize/overweight permitting system
  • Knowledge of map reading

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.
Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Special Requirements:

This position requires 24-7 accessibility for emergency permit approvals of heavy equipment responding to incidents that are local ( e.g., storm recovery, train derailments) national (e.g., hurricane relief) and international ( e.g., military) equipment in nature.
