Job Description

The Manager of Food, Activity and Nutrition (FAN) Initiatives plays a leadership role in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of FAN programs and partnerships. In collaboration with team members and various internal and external partners, this position is responsible for sustaining and expanding priorities, fostering collaboration, and supporting fundraising efforts to ensure that projects align with community-identified priorities, FAN strategies, the Magoon Institute's community health strategy and Lurie Children's mission.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Manage planning, developing, implementing and evaluating food, activity and nutrition initiatives within the Magoon Institute, in collaboration with FAN team members and internal and external partners to sustain and grow food, activity and nutrition priorities, advance collaboration and support fundraising.
  • Ensure that projects alignment with community identified priorities, FAN strategies, Magoon Institute community health strategy and Lurie Children's mission.
  • Lead the development of new grant proposals and stewardship reports to FAN/Magoon Institute funders.
  • Collaborate with Director and other Magoon Institute leadership, Office of Sponsored Programs and Lurie Children's Foundation staff to prepare grant and philanthropic proposals and reporting, ensuring consistent and timely communication.
  • Provide project and personnel management expertise for and support of FAN initiatives, programming and projects to ensure impactful current and new initiatives.
  • Manage and monitors grant and program budgets in collaboration with Director. Develop and implement linkages and care extension models with clinical and community partners to ensure that children, youth and their families can access and make use of vital healthcare resources around chronic disease management and family wellness after discharge.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a coordinated approach to community engagement, including standardizing community engagement models and providing expertise to other Magoon Institute programs to increase collaboration and strengthen programming.
  • Manage and provide oversight to program staff on the implementation of community- and school-based chronic disease prevention strategies. Provide technical assistance and support to community partners in neighborhood-level needs assessments related to walkability and accessibility through designing and delivering training and overseeing sub-contractor relationships. Serves as expert advisor on food, activity and nutrition-related issues and programs; represents Lurie Children's and FAN leadership at local and regional food, activity, and nutrition-related meetings, coalitions and collaborations cultivating key partnerships and projects.
  • Responsible for supervising and oversight of staff and students, including hiring, separating, promoting, demoting, and writing and administering performance evaluations.
  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree required. Master's degree in public health or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the duties of the job.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience with relevant obesity prevention/weight management initiatives with a focus on food, physical activity and nutrition; hospital, health system or public health experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing, planning and implementing community, education or public health interventions and leading program evaluation.
  • Proven ability in complex, program, and project management, including external partnership management, multi-disciplinary team leadership, and rigorous timelines, workplans and goal development. Flexibility to work on evenings and weekends, travel throughout Chicago required/likely.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, problem-solving, organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and delegate tasks effectively. Strong leadership and team management abilities with a focus on fostering a positive work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on complex issues and manage multiply projects.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from different backgrounds and disciplines and build relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and be self-directed.
