Position Description:

The Department of Rhetoric at the University of Iowa is searching for a one-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor, teaching three courses per semester. There is a possibility of 1-year renewals of this position for a maximum of 3 years. The position will typically involve teaching 3 General Education Rhetoric courses per semester.



RHET 1030 is required for almost all undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, typically in their first or second year.It is a discussion-based class (enrollment capped at 20) with a focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. Instructors should be capable ofteaching discussion-based courses, offering clear and frequent feedback, scaffolding assignments, and designing syllabi that follow our curriculum.

Education Requirement:

  • PhD in English, with the thesis successfully defended by the start date.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching composition to first-year college students

  • Experience tutoring writing

  • Community-Engaged Pedagogy and Research Experience

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in Online Instruction and Digital Humanities

  • Experience working with K-12 students

  • Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy
