See Yourself as a Senior Principal Engineer

Senior Principal Engineer is responsible for leading technical, business, and organizational projects, operating both independently and alongside teams to architect and implement sophisticated data pipelines, models, and operational systems. The Principal Software Engineer, outside of software engineering duties, is expected to manage software projects, collaborate, and make proposals across several teams regarding engineering work and help team members to make informed decisions in alignment with strategic plans, ensuring we remain on the cutting edge of technology. This role does not involve direct management responsibilities but requires a deep technical expertise and leadership to guide projects and mentor teams.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Extension of the Principal Engineer responsibilities, the Senior Principal Engineer role has the equivalent decision making and judgment as a Vice President, Engineering.

  • Drive innovation in our operational systems, improving automation, monitoring, and deployment processes to support our data science efforts.

  • Represent Radian and its values in public communication in all aspects of our software development lifecycle and technical innovations.

  • Interact with customers and other external stakeholders as a consultant and spokesperson for critical projects and aspects of our technical architecture.

  • Provide mentorship for other areas of the business to help them grow in their technical responsibilities and to provide expert advice and solutions that enhance work functions.

  • Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance that impact all of Engineering at Radian.

  • Solve technical problems of the highest scope and complexity for the entire organization. Serving as a subject matter expert in AWS and other cloud, advising on best practices for cloud infrastructure, services, and security related to MLOps and engineering.

  • Advise on the architecture and deployment of machine learning models and deep learning systems that are integral to our products and services.

  • Lead the design and construction of advanced data engineering pipelines, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and reliability.

  • Independently evaluate, create and test ideas via POCs related to new product innovations and concepts

  • Collaborate on database architecture and management, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and access for data science applications.

  • Research and implement cutting-edge AI, including Generative AI technologies and tools to maintain our homegenius leadership in the data science and technology sector.

  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Drive operational efforts to manage expenses and optimize return on investments

  • Exert significant influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of Radian.

  • Ensure that our standards for style, maintainability, and best practices are suitable for the unique problems of scale and diversity of use represented by the Radian products.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Education and Prior Work-Related Experience:

  • Degree Requirement: Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience

  • Work Experience: 15 or more years of prior work-related experience

Additional Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in a senior technical role within the technology field, preferably with a focus on data engineering, cloud operations, data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

  • Experience with multiple Large Language Models and embeddings in creating domain-adapted technologies.

  • Demonstrated expertise in AWS, including but not limited to EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, and AWS SageMaker, or equivalent alternatives.

  • Proficient in database management and architecture, with a solid understanding of both SQL and NoSQL databases.

  • Expert knowledge of data engineering practices, tools, and frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop, Kafka).

  • Strong foundation in IT infrastructure, networking, and security principles.

  • Proven ability to architect and deploy scalable and robust systems supporting complex data science applications.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring and guiding teams.

  • Professional experience with Angular, React, ASP.NET or another modern JavaScript web framework (Vue, Ember, etc) OR nodeJS, Java, C#/.NET.

  • Experience with writing automated tests (eg. Jest, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape).

  • Experience using Git in a professional, workplace environment.

  • A solid understanding in core web and browser concepts (eg. how the browser parses and constructs a web page).

  • Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment.

  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions.

  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems.

  • Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process.

  • Ability to thrive in a geographically distributed organization.

  • Experience in a peak performance organization, preferably a tech startup.
