Our client, A rapidly growing real estate private equity firm, is looking for a Controller with experience in the asset management industry and a strong entrepreneurial spirit to join their organization.

LOCATION:
San Francisco, CA. Hybrid capacity

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The position requires a candidate with extensive financial and accounting experience with commercial real estate investments and fund accounting, as well as fair value financial reporting. The candidate must have the ability to work independently and be able to quickly assume the duties of the position. The candidate will work with the CFO and the fund administrator on a variety of property level and fund level matters. The position reports directly to the CFO.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Monthly Accounting - Review GAAP compliant financial statements for each of the Funds' real estate investments, budget versus actual variance analysis, and cash flow of the properties. Ensure all critical items like mortgages, taxes etc. are thoughtfully treated.
  • Quarterly Reporting - Work with the fund administrator and review GAAP compliant quarterly reports to investors using the guidelines outlined in the partnership agreement including expenses, allocations and waterfall calculations.
  • Performance Reporting - Prepare and analyze a variety of Fund level and property level performance returns; report and discuss performance with the CFO, and the Firm's Executive Team. Work with the CFO on financial projections, financial modeling and sensitivity analyses.
  • Assist in quarterly valuation process.
  • Identify accounting issues, research proper treatment; consult with audit firms to conclude on treatment.
  • Calculate management fees.
  • Oversee capital calls, distributions and carry calculations for the Funds and various co-investments.
  • Manage cash and any credit facility loan draw requests. Help with servicing credit facility and related compliance requests.
  • Management company - review and process expense reports and invoice payments.
  • Oversee year-end audit and tax compliance - interface with fund administrator, auditors, and tax return preparers and be responsible for all phases of the annual financial audit, including coordination of audit work papers. Review and file externally prepared annual tax returns.
  • Assist in the preparation of SEC compliance reports, ad hoc compliance filings, and internal documentation.
  • Interface with operating partners who run the day-to-day operations of each property.
  • Address LPs audit, reporting, and diligence requests.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the Firm's Principals and CFO. This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • BS degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years' experience in fund accounting. Real estate finance is preferred.
  • Strong GAAP accounting background, including fair value accounting.
  • Tax familiarity is a plus.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel / Office and knowledge of QuickBooks and the ability to quickly learn new accounting/reporting applications and software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, responsible with exceptional organizational, prioritization, and critical thinking skills.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively with small internal teams and outside service providers.
  • Must be committed to consistently high-quality work and exercise sound judgment with integrity.
  • Must be thorough and patient with details and procedures.

COMPENSATION:
Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs. With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure: $180K - $200K + bonus. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
