Position Title:School and STEM Program Coordinator- Oklahoma Children's Hospital

Department:Child Life Program

Job Description:

General Description: Under minimal supervision, develops, implements, monitors, assesses and evaluates school and STEM (science, technology, education, math) programs, activities, and events to assist patients and families with educational needs during hospitalization. This position will also provide health related and educational internal and external community outreach programs.

Essential Functions/Duties:

  • Responsible for creating and articulating a strategic plan for an innovative school and STEM hospital education program at Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health.
  • Aligns program with departmental and system wide goals and initiatives.
  • Develops and implements programming that supports the specialized school needs of hospitalized patients - including Individualized Education/504 plans, homebound needs, instruction, and tutoring.
  • Develops and implements programming that supports the increased knowledge and interest in STEM related activities, events, and programmatic initiatives, including robotics and engineering focus programming.
  • Assist parents/caregivers and school-based educators with educational planning and other related resources for long term patients, chronic diagnoses and other high need populations, including school re-entry support for children's socio-emotional needs who have experienced hospitalization.
  • Act as a school liaison between local school district(s) and our behavioral health educational program needs.
  • Create and implement a summer educational series program utilizing community partners, resources, and departmental collaborations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Oklahoma education laws/policies related to special education, home school and homebound programs.
  • Coordinate health education, enrichment and community outreach by developing relationships with school districts, educators and volunteers.
  • Collaborate on funding and grants for sustainability of the program. Maintain and initiate partnerships with education and health organizations and community.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of STEM programming and research growth opportunities that align with departmental and hospital wide goals.
  • Work collaboratively within the Child Life and Therapeutic Programs department along with OU Health hospital departments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Education; Master's in Special Education, or STEM discipline preferred

Experience: At least three (3) years of educational related experience; preferable to have experience in Elementary & Intermediate Education, Special Education, STEM and/or robotics, English Second Language, Creative Arts; or experience working with high-need, alternatively educated students

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and writing skills to include excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and instruction skills.
  • Knowledge of academic instruction theory.
  • Ability to plan and implement STEM related programming.
  • Ability to supervise school and STEM focused groups and volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of patient and family educational needs and Oklahoma educational requirements.
  • Coordinate equipment, supplies, and materials inventory for STEM activities, programs and initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of trends and opportunities in health education programming and outreach.
  • Good technology skills.

Certifications/Registrations Required: Oklahoma Teaching Certificate; or American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence
