Job Description:

The Security Officer and K9 provide and maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers. This position is responsible for assisting in security response efforts, as well as providing emotional support to employees, patients and visitors.

Essential duties:

  • As a team, the Officer and K9 tours and inspects facilities and grounds frequently to assist in maintaining a safer and more secure environment. The Officer and K9 assist in Security response efforts, as well as providing emotional support to caregivers, patients, and visitors. The K9 Program supports the care site's comprehensive workplace violence prevention program with an additional focus on patient's physical and psychological safety.
  • Investigates and completes written K9 utilization reports of complaints, critical security incidents and unusual activities involving patients, caregivers and visitors; submits all reports to the security leadership by the end of the shift in which the report occurs. Maintains an accurate log of all relevant security activities during each shift. Maintain accurate K9 training records and monthly activities.
  • Checks unoccupied areas. Escorts patients, visitors and caregivers. Assists clinical staff with patient room searches (presence, or detection if K9 has skill set) and with command presence handling disruptive patients.
  • Presents a professional appearance and demeanor at all times. Follows instructions and is aware of and follows safe work practices. Must satisfactorily complete competencies as required by the department during the conditional period. Is able to demonstrate and successfully use all required competencies annually.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned. Acts a role model and leader for other Officers. May be assigned to assist the K9 Trainer with training new K9 Officers.
  • Provides daily care of the K9 to include feeding, exercising, grooming, medical care, and cleaning of the K9s kennel. Keep the K9 physically fit through training and exercise. Keep the K9 at an acceptable level of readiness to be able to pass K9 evaluations. May perform public demonstrations as a K9 team.
  • Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Intermountain Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.

Minimum Qualifications

Colorado Security Officer Licensing Requirements is required where applicable (Denver Metro) upon hire or must obtain within 180 days of hire

National Police Canine Association Standards for Training Certifications are required upon hire or must be obtained within 180 days of hire

Two (2) years of experience in canine handling, Security operations or canine security team management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree in related discipline.

International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic, Advanced, Supervisor certifications or Certified Healthcare Professional Administrator (CHPA) designation is preferred National Police Canine Association certification Colorado or local jurisdictional Security Officer/Guard licensure or certification is preferred Workplace Violence Prevention certification is preferred.

Three (3) years of Healthcare Security program management and security team leadership experience is preferred.

Associates degree in related discipline.
