Job Description

The Deliberative Citizenship Initiative (DCI) at Davidson College is seeking an energetic and hard-working Assistant Director. The mission of the DCI is to create opportunities for Davidson students, faculty, staff, community members, and alumni to engage with one another on difficult and contentious issues facing our community and society. The Assistant Director will assist with the development, implementation, and assessment of the initiative's programs and components. These components include efforts to create opportunities for productive dialogue and deliberation in diverse classroom settings, outside of the classroom, and in the community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing and managing logistics of the Initiative's meetings, programs, and events:
    • Meetings: Co-Conveners and Advisory Council
    • Programs: Deliberation Across the Curriculum, Campus Engagement, Community Engagement, and Deliberation Research and Evaluation
    • Events: Deliberative Citizenship Speaker Series, Deliberative Citizenship Training Workshops, Deliberative Forums, and "D" Teams
  • Recruiting, training, and managing the DCI Fellows
  • Maintaining and updating the initiative's website and social media presence
  • Tracking, assessing, and reporting on the initiative's progress and outcomes
  • Developing DCI resources and documents
  • Assisting with relevant research projects
  • Connecting, communicating, and coordinating with members of the Davidson College community and the larger civic community
  • Managing and tracking the budget of the Initiative
  • Managing special projects related to the mission of the DCI

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Four-year college degree or equivalent experience
  2. Enthusiasm about providing deliberation opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community members
  3. Experience conducting research on and writing about contentious issues of public concern
  4. Excellent organizational, technical and writing skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines consistently
  5. Ability to work some evenings and weekends and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, and innovation-oriented environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Familiarity with the research and literature on dialogue, deliberation, democracy, and higher education
  2. Experience working with undergraduate students, college faculty and staff, and/or community members
  3. Experience coordinating complex projects with multiple components
  4. 3+ years of professional experience in a related area
  5. Master's degree in a related field
  6. Familiarity with WordPress, Canva, and Excel
  7. Participation in dialogue and/or deliberation training programs

Other:

A skills assessment test may be administered. This is a limited-time, grant-funded 2-year position that will report to the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty. However, there may be an opportunity for longer-term employment contingent upon additional funding.
