Employers may ask you for additional information during the job application process. We’ll show you examples of a reference list and a salary history. Depending on your field, you may also be asked to provide examples of your work such as writing clips, artwork, video production, web site development, computer code or other samples. Be careful that you don’t use examples that are the intellectual property of a previous employer without prior permission.


We recommend bringing a reference list to job interviews in case it is requested. Preparing this list is very simple. You’ll want to list the name, title, and contact information for professional references that are familiar with your work. If possible, it is best to give former supervisors as references. Before submitting someone as a reference, let the individual know that you are applying for a new job and ask if they would be willing to be a reference for you and your work.

Some employers do not allow supervisors to provide feedback on former employees. If they agree, verify the contact information that they would prefer you submit (i.e., some people prefer being contacted at home rather than at work.)
